In solidariety with the protests for George Floyd’s death, Freestyle Love Supreme postpone the release of the documentary We Are Freestyle Love Supreme, that was scheduled for June 5 on Hulu. No new release date is been announced so far.

Read their statement below.

DEADLINE: Improv hip-hop group Freestyle Love Supreme has postponed the release of its documentary We Are Freestyle Love Supreme out of solidarity with protesters nationwide.

The postponement comes two days before the film was set to begin streaming on Hulu. The announcement said the group’s “collective attention” has turned toward more pressing concerns.

We Are Freestyle Love Supreme is a documentary on the show that Miranda and several of his Hamilton collaborators regularly staged before and after the successes of In the Heights and Hamilton. The film chronicles the group’s reunion for a Broadway run that concluded earlier this year.

No new release date was announced.

“Today our country, our world struggles to reach an end to this systemic racial injustice, intolerance, police brutality and hate,” Freestyle Love Supreme said in a statement on Twitter. “We add our voices to that fight.”

We Are Freestyle Love Supreme premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. It is believed to be the first film to postpone its release following the death of George Floyd.

“We are for the freedom of expression, creativity, inclusion, equality, and most of all, love,” the group said. “Our work has always centered around creating a safe space for those ideals to flourish. Our show does not exist without the operations of brilliant black artists that created two of our most beloved American art forms, jazz and hip-hop.”

Hulu has announced the release of We Are Freestyle Love Supreme, the documentary about the titular hip-hop improv group co-founded by Lin-Manuel Miranda that originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. The documentary is scheduled to premiere on June 5.
Directed by Andrew Fried, the film chronicles Freestyle Love Supreme’s journey from the basement of the Drama Bookshop to stage success. Fried began filming when the group first toured the show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2005, and the documentary shows footage of the troupe, including Miranda, Kail, Christopher Jackson, James Monroe Iglehart and more.

DEADLINE: The Andrew Fried-directed documentary We Are Freestyle Love Supreme produced by Hamilton icon Lin-Manuel Miranda has found a home at Hulu and will hit the streamer June 5.

The docu made its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and spotlights the 15-year journey of the hip-hop improvisational group founded by Miranda, Thomas Kail and Anthony Veneziale. The group called Freestyle Love Supreme was formed long before Hamilton and In The Heights hit Broadway. Fried began chronicling the group in the summer of 2005, documenting the early days of Freestyle Love Supreme beatboxing and rapping on the sidewalks. Fast forward 14 years later and Fried brings us to a reunion with a series of shows in New York City that led to a triumphant run on Broadway.

In addition to Miranda, Kail and Veneziale, the docu features Arthur Lewis, Christopher Jackson, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Chris Sullivan, Bill Sherman, James Monroe Iglehart and Andrew Bancroft.

Miranda produces alongside Kail Jenny & Jon Steingart, Jill Furman, Sarina Roma, Fried and Endeavor Content.

News: ‘In The Heights’ will open in theaters in Summer 2021

[ Written on April 22 2020 by Francesca ]

After been postponed indefinitely, In The Heights has a new date release: June 18, 2021.

DEADLINE: Warner Bros. now will release Jon M. Chu’s In the Heights on June 18, 2021. The movie based on the hit Broadway musical originally was expected to open on June 26 this year, but the COVID-19 shutdown of theaters pushed the movie off Warners’ calendar.

In the Heights is a feature take on Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes’ four-time Tony-winning 2008 musical.

In the Heights is set in the Hispanic-American community of New York City’s bustling Washington Heights. When the neighborhood’s charismatic local bodega owner, and the pic’s humble narrator, finally decides to fulfill his dream of going to the island his parents called home, his departure will change his beloved block forever.

Miranda, the star, producer and author of the Tony-winning In the Heights and later Hamilton, told talk series host Rosie O’Donnell last month: “We were literally recording the score when all of this started happening. There’s a lot that remains to be done on that movie. We were finishing the score and the mixing and just getting the music exactly right.”

Anthony Bregman, Mara Jacobs, Scott Sanders and Miranda are producing. Marc Klein wrote the script, with screenplay by Hudes. Stephanie Beatriz, Jimmy Smits, Corey Hawkins, Dascha Polanco, Melissa Barrera, and Marc Anthony star in the big-screen take of In the Heights.

Miranda on Twitter last month promised fans that when In the Heights finally sees the light of day post-coronavirus: “When we can safely gather again, flags in hand, we will be there, enjoying this movie in theaters. We will have the premiere uptown. The best summer of our lives, together.”
