News: Lin-Manuel Miranda is Gizmoduck on DuckTales

[ Written on May 04 2018 by ]

On May 11, in the episode ‘Beware the B.U.D.D.Y. System!’, the character Gizmoduck (aka Fenton Crackshell-Cabrera) will make his debut in the DuckTales serie. As reported by D23.com, on his experience voicing the character, Lin-Manuel Miranda said “I’m really excited that a new generation of kids will be growing up with DuckTales. As a huge fan of the original series, I love that I can share this new version with my sons.”
Check below the first TV commercial featuring Lin-Manuel’s voice, a photo promo and what Francisco Angones, the serie Co-Producer and Story Editor, has to say about his Gizmoduck and how he got Miranda on board.

Francisco Angones on Convincing Lin-Manuel Miranda to Be on DuckTale

I loved comic books growing up, but being a Latino kid in the 80s reading comic books, we had [only] one superhero. We had Vibe, the DC Comics superhero. He is a gang member who has break dancing powers. That’s not a sterling example of Latino diversity. He’s been rehabbed. He is great. But when it came time to do DuckTales, the character Gizmoduck is the main superhero character, like Peter Parker meets Iron-Man. and I was like, “God, wouldn’t it be cool if he was Latino? Wouldn’t it be cool if it wasn’t just the token superhero character but if he was the main superhero in DuckTales?”
We looked at the character and we did this interesting revamp of him. In the original series he was this kind of nerd who had a million ideas at once. He was an accountant that wanted to work for Scrooge McDuck and he talked his way into every situation and spoke very quickly. He was brilliant, but kind of a dupe, and earnest and lovable. I was like, “That sounds like Lin-Manuel Miranda.” Stupidly, I wrote the character as if it was Lin-Manuel Miranda and I wrote this letter to him. I explaining to him about how I got a D in that presentation and I said, “Look, I love Disney, I love Marvel, I love superheroes in general, there is not a Latino superhero in the multiplex at all. I want my kids to have one and I can do that.” I knew he had a kid and I told him, “Wouldn’t you like that?” I didn’t know at the time that he was also a massive DuckTales fan. We sent him the letter and he said yes. He is recurring on our show as Fenton Crackshell-Cabrera now. We record him at 2:00 AM because he is a very busy man, but it’s amazing.

News: Lin-Manuel Miranda in the tv adaptation of His Dark Materials

[ Written on March 09 2018 by ]

New television project for Lin-Manuel Miranda! He will star in the tv adaptation, ordered by the British BBC One, of Philip Pullman’s fantasy series His Dark Materials as the balloonist-adventurer Lee Scoresby.

EXCLUSIVE FROM DEADLINE: The King’s Speech director Tom Hooper and Dafne Keen, the breakout star of Marvel’s Logan, have signed for the big-budget adaptation of Philip Pullman’s fantasy epic His Dark Materials. I hear that the in-demand director has just closed a deal to helm the eight-part series following lengthy negotiations, while Keen will play main character Lyra, an orphan, who lives in a parallel universe. Hamilton creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda is also joining as adventurer Lee Scoresby.

I understand that Hooper has been keen for some time to oversee the series, which is produced by Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner’s Bad Wolf in association with New Line Cinema for BBC One, but that he has been trying to make the dates align so that he can do both this as well as the live-action adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Cats for Universal and Working Title.

Keen, meanwhile, is coming off the back of Logan with Hugh Jackman, where she played Laura, Wolverine’s daughter, otherwise known as X-23. She also starred in Spanish drama The Refugees, which is produced by BBC Worldwide and Atresmedia for La Sexta. Miranda’s star is also exceptionally high off the back of his hit stage musical Hamilton and Disney’s Moana. The multi-hyphenate acts in upcoming musical fantasy Mary Poppins Returns and is a producer on Lionsgate’s fantasy The Kingkiller Chronicle.

BBC One ordered the series, which is written by National Treasure and Wonder writer Jack Thorne, in 2015. Pullman’s work, which featured three books: Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass, is a complex tale of physics, philosophy and theology featuring witches and armored polar bears. It tells the story of the coming of age of two children, Lyra and Will, who wander through a series of parallel universes.

Bad Wolf and distributor BBC Worldwide have also been talking to a number of international broadcasters and streaming services about the project, which is thought to be one of the most expensive British dramas to date. I hear that Apple and Netflix are among the suitors for the U.S. and global rights.

Northern Lights introduces Lyra whose search for a kidnapped friend uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children and turns into a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust. In the second book, The Subtle Knife, she is joined on her journey by Will, a boy who possesses a knife that can cut windows between worlds. As Lyra learns the truth about her parents and her prophesied destiny, the two young people are caught up in a war against celestial powers that ranges across many worlds and leads to a thrilling conclusion in The Amber Spyglass.

Northern Lights was previously turned into a feature titled The Golden Compass in 2007 starring Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman. The series is set to start production in Wales soon and the producers are expected to announce casting in the coming weeks. It will be exec produced by Pullman, Tranter, Gardner, Toby Emmerich and Carolyn Blackwood for New Line; Piers Wenger and Chris Irving for BBC One and Deborah Forte for Scholastic.

Keen is represented by Independent Talent, Let’s Work Together and Stone Genow, while Hooper is also represented by Independent Talent and ICM.

Baz Bamigboye adds via Twitter that Lin-Manuel will shoot in Wales from this summer and the series will likely to be screened in late 2019 or early 2020.

[ Written on October 28 2017 by Francesca ]

Showtime is set to develop the series adaptation of “The Kingkiller Chronicle” that has been in the works at Lionsgate, the network announced Thursday.

The series will be executive produced by “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, with John Rogers serving as showrunner. Miranda will also compose music for the series, which is based on Patrick Rothfuss’ bestselling contemporary fantasy trilogy. Produced by Lionsgate, the series will be executive produced by Rogers, Miranda, Rothfuss, Robert Lawrence, and Jennifer Court.

“Showtime has always championed bold storytelling,” said Miranda. “Pat Rothruss’ ‘Kingkiller’ series is some of the most exciting storytelling I have ever read. I could not be more thrilled to help bring the sights and sounds of his wondrous world of Temerant to the screen.”

The series is centered on the wizard Kvothe, who survives a tragic childhood to become a notorious household name. “The Kingkiller Chronicle” series of books and novellas has sold 10 million copies, and the first two books — “The Name of the Wind” and “The Wise Man’s Fear” — were New York Times bestsellers. The television adaption is an origin story set a generation before the events of the first novel. [Source]
