News: Lin-Manuel Miranda to join Tony’s Carpool Karaoke

[ Written on June 03 2016 by Francesca ]

The June 6 installment of CBS’ The Late Late Show with James Corden will feature the latest edition of the viral sing-your-hits-in-a-moving-vehicle bit — and this one is tied to the Tonys, which Corden is hosting.

EW has learned that Hamilton mastermind and 2016’s likely Tony darling Lin-Manuel Miranda will take a seat in Corden’s music mobile, and the pair will be joined by Audra McDonald (who stars in Shuffle Along), Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson (who’s currently on Broadway in Fully Committed), and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt actress Jane Krakowski (Tony-nominated this year for She Loves Me). On the set list? Plenty of show tunes. [source]

News: Lin-Manuel Miranda Will Star Opposite Emily Blunt in Mary Poppins Sequel

[ Written on April 28 2016 by Francesca ]

It’s official! Tony, Pulitzer, Emmy andGrammy winner Lin-Manuel Miranda will star alongside Emily Blunt in Disney’s new Mary Poppins. The Wrap writes that the Hamilton star and creator is now confirmed for the previously reported project, where he will play Jack, a lamplighter (not Bert, famously played by Dick Van Dyke).

Before you picture Miranda singing/rapping “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” keep in mind: the new film will not be a direct remake of the 1964 Julie Andrews movie. Instead, the new Poppins will focus on the other tales in author P.L. Travers’ 1934-1988 children’s book series and is considered a sequel to the original.

Rob Marshall, who helmed the recent big-screen adaptation of Into the Woods, is on board to direct. Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, the team behind Hairspray, Smash’s Bombshell and the Broadway-bound Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, will compose a new score and original songs. This is the third Disney project for Miranda, who penned a number for Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens and wrote songs for Disney’s upcoming Moana. [Source]

News: ‘Hamilton’ Wins Pulitzer Prize For Drama

[ Written on April 18 2016 by Francesca ]

Hamilton won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama this afternoon, the latest affirmation of author, composer, lyricist and star Lin-Manuel Miranda’s talent, already recognized with a McArthur Foundation “genius” grant, celebrations at the White House and, seemingly, more accolades each day. Hamilton is the first musical to win the drama award since Next to Normal in 2010.

Miranda released this statement: “It is a tremendous honor to even be considered for this very prestigious award. Quiara [Alegria Hudes] and I were elated to have been recognized as finalists for In The Heights, so to win today for Hamilton is beyond my wildest dreams. This award is for everyone who has been a part of Hamilton’s six plus year journey.  To be the ninth musical to ever win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in its 100 year history is truly humbling for all of us.  For Hamilton to now be in the same company as Of Thee I Sing, South Pacific, Fiorello!, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, A Chorus Line, Sunday in the Park with George, Rent, and most recently Next to Normal is outside of our own comprehension. Look at where we are. Look at where we started.” [Source]

News: ‘Hamilton’ Expected to win Pulitzer prize

[ Written on April 16 2016 by Francesca ]

Will “Hamilton” win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama on Monday? The better question may be whether there is any legitimate reason to believe that Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hip-hop musical will not win the award. In addition to the incredible amount of acclaim it has already received, “Hamilton” more than meets the tendency of Pulitzer judges to give the award to an original work “dealing with American life.” Stephen Karam’s “The Humans,” which recently transferred to Broadway, will likely be named as a finalist.
