Scans: Lin Manuel Miranda for Fast Company

[ Written on May 17 2016 by Francesca ]

If you ever find yourself in a position to sit down with Lin-Manuel Miranda, know this: You never really “sit down” with Lin-Manuel Miranda. He is always in motion, on a mission; standing still really isn’t his thing. When the 36-year-old composer and lyricist was dreaming up the songs for Hamilton, the Broadway phenomenon that he wrote every line of and currently stars in eight times a week, he would often walk for hours through the streets of New York City, willing the words to come. Even now, he insists that the calmest he ever feels is during the 2 hours and 45 minutes of the show, when he gets to bound around onstage as Alexander Hamilton, “yelling and rapping at the top of my lungs. It’s the most relaxing part of my day.” The physical exertion returns him, every night, to himself, offering an unlikely respite from the attention that’s swirled around him since Hamilton became a cultural and financial force. The only way that Miranda stays whole, now that everyone wants to engage with him—Hollywood, the White House, hundreds of thousands of Twitter followers, the music industry, Broadway obsessives, big-money investors, American history buffs, prize committees, schoolteachers, the political establishment—is to keep moving. I’ve updated the gallery with Lin’s photos from the feature that Complex Magaizne did on him & Chance The Rapper.

Things are coming full circle for Miranda, who’s honed his talents in musical theater for more than 15 years. The New York native won a Grammy for his acclaimed musical, In the Heights, in 2009. That same year, he took his big shot by debuting a portion of an experimental, hip-hop inspired composition then-named “The Hamilton Mixtape” at the White House Poetry Jam. He couldn’t have imagined how things would unfold from there.

In 2016, Miranda was invited back to both the Grammys and the White House for some well-earned recognition. He picked up his second award for Hamilton, which was recently nominated for a record-breaking 16 Tony Awards, and is now perpetually sold out on Broadway, with the price of resale tickets often running more than $1,000. And the cast accompanied him on this trip to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue for an intimate performance of the show, which regularly boasts an audience packed with everyone from celebrities to suburban moms, all wildly cheering for battle rap scenes between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. News: New York Theater is Improbably Thriving

[ Written on March 08 2016 by Francesca ]

As George Washington sings, “The elephant is in the room,” so let’s get this out of the way: Lin-Manuel Miranda’s rainbow history lesson is the only real-world megahit that has felt like genuine theatrical art since A Chorus Line and, before that, the last golden age. Partly, that’s owed to the music, which bridges Broadway tradition and hip-hop; the cast album outsold most pop this year. Its defiantly unorthodox casting also makes it politically potent, creating a new generation of theater fans (many of whom could never have been dragged to a Broadway show before) and the stars to go with them. Has it remade the musical? It didn’t have to. It merely — merely! — exploited the full power that was already built in. [source]
